How to Download Instagram Videos With Audio

The silent video problem
Every few weeks someone reports that a downloaded Instagram video plays fine but has no sound. It is almost never the video itself — it is how it was downloaded. Instagram stores video and audio together in a standard MP4, but some downloaders extract only the video stream because it is cheaper to fetch, or because the audio sits in a separate adaptive stream on newer posts.
The fix is to read the metadata properly and take the complete rendition the platform marks as the primary playback stream. That stream always contains both tracks.
How to check a file before you keep it
On desktop you can inspect a file quickly before trusting it:
- MediaInfo or any similar tool will list an audio track alongside the video track.
- In VLC, the Audio → Audio Track menu should show a real track rather than "Disable".
- On Windows, right-click → Properties → Details shows a bitrate for the audio channel when one exists.
Downloading with the audio intact
Paste the video post link into the video downloader and the tool reads the post metadata, picks the highest-resolution rendition and streams the whole container to your browser. There is no separate audio re-muxing step because nothing was split in the first place.
This matters for carousels too. A mixed post with a video slide and photo slides returns the complete video slide, audio included, rather than a stripped-down preview.
When you only want the audio
Interviews, talks, stand-up clips and music posts are often more useful as audio files. Instead of saving a large video and converting it later on your computer, run it through the MP3 converter: it resolves the same source file and then re-encodes just the audio track in your browser.
Because that encoding happens on your own device with WebAssembly, the video never gets uploaded to a conversion server. For a forty-minute interview that is the difference between a few seconds of upload and none at all.
Quality expectations
Instagram compresses everything it serves. The file you download is the best version the platform is willing to hand out, which for modern uploads is typically 1080p at a reasonable bitrate. It will not match the creator’s original camera file, and no tool can produce that — the original was never published.
If you need broadcast-quality footage, ask the creator. Downloading is for personal keepsakes and references.
